Inspection and Certification Procedure & Types

The inspection of the tourist accommodation is carried out in accordance with the requirements of the legislation as well as the relevant standards.

The classification of main tourist accommodation (hotel units) into star categories is carried out according to its facilities and technical specifications, and the classification system for main tourist accommodation (hotels) includes the technical and operational specifications, as well as the rated criteria related to structures, equipment-logistical infrastructure, amenities and services (in kind or services).

Each accommodation is obliged according to the current legislative framework to be classified in one of the categories, as long as it meets the specifications and collects the necessary number of points required for classification in the specific category, based on optional graded criteria - they are compulsorily classified in five star categories, with the highest category being five stars and the lowest category being one star.

The body responsible for the classification of the main hotel accommodations, which also keeps a register of distinctive titles, is the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels (H.E.E.).

The classification of non-main tourist accommodation (hotel units) into key categories is carried out according to its services and technical specifications, and the classification system for non-main tourist accommodation (hotels) includes the technical and functional specifications, as well as the graded criteria related to structures, equipment-logistical infrastructure, amenities and benefits (in kind or services) - they are classified into five key categories, with the highest category of five keys and the lowest category of one key.

The competent body for the issuance of a certificate of optional classification of rented furnished rooms - apartments (EEDD), is defined as the Regional Tourism Service concerned by location.
